Chiwara was a half-animal, half-human being, born of a snake and a woman, the first human being. Chiwara cultivated the soil with his claws and a stick given to him by his mother. He was endowed with magical powers that enabled him to transform grass into millet. The crops were so abundant that human beings lost interest in them and no longer paid attention to the harvests. So much so that Chiwara left, burrowing into the ground. To make amends, the humans built an altar in which his spirit could reside and created crest masks to commemorate Chiwara memory and teachings.

Chiwara était un être mi-animal, mi-humain, né d’un serpent et d’une femme, le premier être humain. Chiwara cultivait la terre avec ses griffes et un bâton donné par sa mère. Il était doté de pouvoirs magiques : il savait transformer l’herbe en mil. Les cultures étaient si abondantes que les hommes ne prêtèrent plus attention aux récoltes. Alors Chiwara s’en alla en s’enfouissant dans le sol. Pour se faire pardonner, les humains construisirent alors un autel dans lequel l’esprit pouvait résider et ils créèrent des masques pour commémorer la mémoire et les enseignements de Chiwara.
